Creating discounts with varying qty's

Hello,

We would like to use discounts on a versioned product with varying qty's.

Ex: 1 order for 250, 3 orders for 500 and 2 orders for 1000

So the discount would apply to a total qty of 3750. We've only been able to make discounts work when the qty's are the same Ex: 15 orders of 250 = total qty of 3750.

Has anybody found a way around this?

I've read the tutorials and searched the index, but haven't found where this is specifically addressed.
