With RIP speed

I'm exhausting all resources on this one and getting nowhere, so I'll throw it out here. We receive creative from a client and print variable data over the creative. The creative is in .pdf format and we'd like to keep it as a .pdf. However, the RIP times on our machines (Ricoh 901 and 751) is ridiculously long, and even "drops the job" at times. We've tried to use .ppml and .vps, which does increase the speed of the RIP, BUT damages to quality of the original creative. Does anyone have ideas on how to resolve this?

Thanks

Bryan
