Multiple Variable fields within Rule

Having trouble understanding how to get multiple variable fields in a single rule. ex. Data file has variable fields that link to a rtf files. Within that rtf file there are additional variable fields. I used the Switch Wizard to handle the rtf files but are unsure how to "add" the variable text within the code.
